Chlorpheniramine
Adults and children ≥12 years: 4mg by mouth every 4-6 hours, max 24mg/day. Children 6-11 years: 2mg every 4-6 hours, max 12mg/day. May cause drowsiness.
Dextromethorphan
10-20mg by mouth every 4 hours, OR 30mg every 6-8 hours. Max 120mg/day.
Dextromethorphan Guaifenesin
Adults and children 12 years and older: Dextromethorphan 15mg and guaifenesin 200mg by mouth every 4 hours. Max 6 doses per day. Take with water to help loosen mucus.
Guaifenesin
200-400mg by mouth every 4 hours, OR extended-release 600-1200mg every 12 hours. Max 2400mg/day. Drink plenty of water.
Honey
1-2 teaspoons by mouth as needed for cough, up to 4 times daily. Not recommended for children under 1 year due to botulism risk.
Menthol Vapor Topical
Apply small amount to chest, throat, or back up to 3-4 times daily. Do not apply to broken skin or under the nose in infants.
Oxymetazoline Nasal
2 sprays in each nostril every 10-12 hours. Do not use for more than 3 days to avoid rebound congestion. Ages 6 and up.
Phenylephrine
10mg by mouth every 4 hours. Max 60mg/day.
Pseudoephedrine
60mg by mouth every 4-6 hours, OR extended-release 120mg every 12 hours. Max 240mg/day. Take last dose by 4pm to avoid insomnia.
Saline Nasal Spray
1-2 sprays in each nostril as needed throughout the day. Safe for frequent use. May cause temporary stinging or sneezing.
